It is with a heavy heart that I write to honor Terrell Police Officer Jacob Candanoza, who was tragically taken from us far too soon on December 8, 2024. This loss has deeply affected me, as I know it has many of you.
I first learned about Jacob’s death when I reposted the news on social media. Shortly after, I received a message from Jake Servantes at Sangin Instruments, who mentioned that he had come across Officer Candanoza’s name while processing recent orders for the LEO Model Neptune Pre-Orders. As I was speaking with Jake, I couldn’t help but gaze at my own Sangin LEO Atlas timepiece on my wrist. Having lost brothers and sisters to this job myself, the weight of Jacob's passing hit me with overwhelming disbelief. I had just celebrated my 35th birthday, and the next day would have marked Jacob’s 29th—an unbearable thought for someone just starting out in law enforcement.
One moment that struck me deeply was the video of Jacob's father proudly filming him driving away on his first shift after completing his last phase of field training in his take-home car. This day marks an important milestone for any officer—filled with hope, excitement, and the belief that you can make a difference in your community.
I remember my first day off of FTO and pulling out of the car wash before going 10-8 (in-service) You’re part cocky, part scared-s***less, part optimistic, and mostly just wondering how you convinced someone to leave you without an adult (FTO) pushing a black and white. I was 28 years old just like Jacob, future looking bright. Damn near felt unstoppable. Tragically, Jacob’s light was extinguished and we’re reminded of our mortality.
On that fateful night, Officer Candanoza initiated a seemingly, routine traffic stop around 11:00 PM. Suspect Darrin Johnson, was at the wheel, on the run for other charges out of Mississippi. Realizing something was off, Officer Candanoza requested a cover unit. As Officer Candanoza made his approach to the vehicle, that’s when chaos erupted. This is when Terrell Police Department began receiving calls about an officer being shot. Darrin Johnson, without provocation, without warning, without regard for human life, shot at Officer Candanoza, striking him serveral times and fled. Despite swift medical assistance from first units on scene and being treated enroute and at the hospital, he did not survive.
Johnson was later apprehended and charged with Officer Candanoza’s murder. This senseless act of violence is a stark reminder of the dangers our officers face daily and the importance of holding accountable those who would seek to harm them.



In the wake of this tragedy, our community has come together to support Jacob’s family. Jake Servantes has generously donated the pre-ordered watch to honor Jacob's legacy and contributed funds that will go directly to his wife, Devon, and their young daughter.
To honor Jacob’s memory further, the Anti Watch Watch Club will launch a drop (a shirt, coin, and strap) for the AWWC Blue Guardians Program, which supports first responder and veteran families during times of crisis. We want Jacob’s family to feel the strength and support of our community during this unimaginable time and ensure proceeds go DIRECTLY to them.
